Sala Chalermkrung

ศาลาเฉลิมกรุง

The 1933 art-deco royal theatre — home stage of masked khon dance, the UNESCO art form, where it lives.

Rama VII gave it to the city for the 1932 sesquicentennial — Thailand's first air-conditioned cinema, by the architect-prince Samaichaloem. Its khon masked-dance performances are the living tradition; the restoration kept the deco grillework and the royal box.
