Bangkok Atlas
Privacy
Last updated 13 October 2026
In short: no accounts, no cookies, no ads and no tracking across other sites. To show the map, search and plan routes, a few services see your request. This page lists each one.
Who is responsible
rsr.works AG, Rabbentalstrasse 87e, 3013 Bern, Switzerland. Questions and requests: hello@bkkatlas.com.
What happens when you use the map
- Hosting. The site runs on Vercel (Vercel Inc., USA; our server functions run in Singapore, pages are delivered from the data centre nearest you). Like any web server, it processes your IP address and the address of each request to deliver pages and keep the service secure. Vercel keeps these request logs for one day.
- Visitor statistics. We count page views and a few actions (for example “route planned”) with Vercel Web Analytics. It sets no cookies and builds no profile of you. Route ends, dropped pins and planned times are removed from page addresses before anything is counted, and no event carries a location or anything you typed.
- Map tiles. Your browser loads the map background, its labels and symbols from OpenFreeMap (Hyperknot Software Kft., Hungary), which sees your IP address and the map area requested. By its own policy its access logs hold no IP addresses; error logs that may keep one are deleted after 7 days.
- Address search. When you search for an address, your browser sends the search text to Photon (komoot GmbH, Germany). Places, stations and areas from the atlas itself are searched on your device.
- Hotel search. When you look for your hotel, the search text goes to our server, which searches our own list of Bangkok hotels, and to Photon as above. The text is part of the request address, so it sits in the one-day hosting logs; we keep nothing else.
- Pasting a booking. If you paste an address from a booking, your device first removes lines labelled as guest or booking details (name, booking number, e-mail, phone), e-mail addresses, phone numbers, links and any number longer than six digits. Only what is left, at most three lines, goes to our hotel search and to Photon. A name on a line of its own can't be recognised, so delete it before you paste. If you paste a Google Maps short link, our server opens that link to read where it points (Google sees our server, not you); the position is read on your device.
- Your hotel. When you set a hotel, your browser asks OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service (OpenStreetMap Foundation, UK) for its Thai name and street, sending the hotel's map ID or its position rounded to about 11 metres. The hotel itself is stored only on your device. In the address bar a route from or to it shows “h”, not its position.
- Walking routes. To draw walking legs on real streets, our server sends the start and end points of each walking leg, rounded to about 11 metres, to openrouteservice (HeiGIT gGmbH, Germany). The points are part of the request address to our server, so they also sit in the one-day hosting logs. When a route starts at your hotel or where you are, that start is one of these points.
- Your location. Only if you allow it in your browser. It is used on your device to show where you are and as the start of a route; we do not store it. While Guide me is on, your phone compares your position with the next stop. Walking legs from where you are, including Route from here, go to our server and openrouteservice as above, rounded to about 11 metres. A route you start from where you are keeps that start in the page address and, for 12 hours, on this device.
- Sharing. A route or trip link leaves out your hotel and where you are unless you tick “Include my hotel in the link”; then they go at about 11 metres. Whoever opens the link, and the app you send it through, sees what it contains. Apps that preview links fetch a card that names the stops but carries no coordinates.
- Google Maps links. The taxi and “map ↗” links open Google Maps with the two ends of that journey or leg. Google sees them only if you tap one.
What stays on your device
Your browser keeps (local storage): your last map view and layer choices, your hotel with any address you pasted for the driver card, your saved places, which tips and notices you have dismissed, a count of your visits (to offer “add to home screen” once, never sent anywhere), and the step and start of a trip you are on, deleted after 12 hours. The service worker keeps copies of app files, map tiles and photos so the map loads faster and works offline. Nothing here leaves your device unless a section above says so. You can delete all of it in your browser settings.
If you write to us
We use your email only to answer you and to fix what you reported, and delete it when it is no longer needed.
